Floating is a crucial part of learning to swim. When learning to swim, self rescue is an important piece. A lot of accidents at the pool happen when someone unexpectedly falls into the water. If they don’t know how to float, they will mostly likely begin to panic which makes the situation even more dangerous. When the child knows how to keep themselves safe by floating the situation is much less dangerous. If they fall in, their reaction isn’t that of panic, it is calm and relaxed. They will roll into a float on their back so that they can get air, and be able to either call for help or kick on their back until they get to a wall they can use to climb out.
